Seeing As A Way Of Knowing: The Relationship Between Observation And Meaning

Abstract
This paper argues for the priority of the visual in the process of knowledge acquisition. It contends that the visual offers its own insights and experience without the need for textual support. It is a study in perception giving emphasis to the process of observation in formulating meaning using examples from different cultures and different periods. It contends that art education has a responsibility to stress the visual as a source of knowledge/meaning without the need for accompanying description or explanation, although this may further amplify understanding.
