Art Education Australia 2009 Research Symposium

Monash University, Caulfield, Melbourne, 16th November 2009

Symposium Overview

On Monday 16th November, 2009, Art Education Australia held a Research Symposium at Monash University's Caulfield campus. The Symposium successfully identified emerging, current and recently completed research in Art Education in Australia, and acted as a catalyst for ongoing dissemination of this research.

Eighteen papers were presented covering a range of interests. With an attendance of nearly 50 Art Education researchers, comprising academics, teachers in schools, curriculum administrators and post-graduate students, were able to engage each other in stimulating conversations concerning the future direction of Art Education in Australia.

Art has now been included in the National Curriculum, although exactly in what form, has not been finalised. The importance of research in art education has become increasingly important as a source of knowledge to feed future developments and shape educational curricula and delivery. The need for the dissemination of this research has never been more pressing. You may be aware that our journal, Australian Art Education, has recently receive an A Plus rating, the highest category of research publication. This reinforces its status as a venue for the publication of papers and its growing standing internationally. The critical focus of this Symposium was to allow opportunity to present and discuss ‘works in progress’, and to provide opportunity for fellow academics to learn of current thinking, and explore mutual interests through scholarly discussion.

This was an informal, focused but relaxed event for art and art education academics, teacher/researchers and postgraduate students.
