Update on the National Review of Visual Education (NRVE) sent to the Steering Committee. The final report (First We See: The National Review of Visual Education) has been signed off by the Governance and Public Affairs Section (GPA) of the Australia Council, and the report has been transmitted to senior officers in the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR - which encompasses the duties of the former DEST) and the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA - which encompasses the responsibilities of the former DCITA). These departments are preparing briefings for the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (Minister Gillard) and the Minister for Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (Minister Garrett). The Ministers will then decide whether the report is made public, published, partially or fully enacted, and generally set the guidelines for how the NRVE is to proceed. I signed off on the final report prior to the Australia Council doing so. I believe the report is articulate and passionate, and reflects the wide range of input made at our meeting when we addressed issues around the final draft version. I would like to acknowledge the fine work of Professor Davis in bringing the threads of the argument together in such a coherent, rigorous and readerly manner. At present, the report remains confidential and embargoed until such time as Ministerial approval is given for its release. When approval is forthcoming about its release, the Australia Council will send a copy of the report to you. Many thanks for your expert input and guidance throughout this long process. Although it has been a far longer process than any of us envisaged or hoped for, I believe the final report is a strong and positive outcome.
